Key Parameters of Air Compressors

When selecting an air compressor, the focus should be on five core parameters: discharge pressure, discharge capacity (air delivery), power, motor speed, and noise level. These parameters directly determine whether the equipment can meet specific operational requirements.

 

Core Performance Parameters
Discharge Pressure
Usually measured in megapascals (MPa) or bars (bar), where 1 MPa ≈ 10 bar. This refers to the pressure of the compressed air output by the compressor; it must exceed the rated operating pressure of the pneumatic equipment being used. For example, standard pneumatic tools typically require 0.7–0.8 MPa, whereas laser cutting machines may require 1.2–1.5 MPa.

Discharge Capacity
Also known as volumetric flow rate, measured in cubic meters per minute (m³/min) or liters per second (L/s). It represents the compressor's air production capacity. When selecting a model, calculate the total air consumption of all connected equipment and apply a safety margin factor of 1.2–1.5 to prevent pressure drops caused by insufficient flow.

 

Power and Energy Efficiency Parameters
Power
Measured in kilowatts (kW). This directly affects electricity consumption. For a given discharge pressure and air quality, a lower specific power-defined as kW/(m³/min)-indicates higher energy efficiency and greater electricity savings. According to the GB 19153-2019 standard ("Minimum Allowable Values ​​of Energy Efficiency and Energy Efficiency Grades for Displacement Air Compressors"), Grade 1 represents the highest level of energy efficiency.

Motor Speed
Measured in revolutions per minute (rpm). Speed ​​is strongly correlated with equipment lifespan. Fixed-speed compressors typically operate at 2,900–2,970 rpm, whereas variable-speed models (such as permanent magnet variable frequency or dual-frequency drives) offer adjustable speed ranges. Operating at lower speeds can significantly reduce wear and the failure rate.

 

Quality and Environmental Parameters
Noise Level
Measured in decibels (dB). According to the *Hygienic Standards for Noise in Industrial Enterprises*, the noise limit for workplaces is 85 dB. Compressor noise levels should remain below this limit; variable-frequency and screw compressors typically produce less noise than piston compressors of the same power rating.

 

Other key parameters:

Air tank capacity: The unit is liters (L). A larger capacity means more compressed air can be stored, reducing the frequency of compressor loading/unloading, thus stabilizing pressure and saving energy.

Air quality: This mainly refers to the oil content and impurities in the compressed air. If used for breathing, food, pharmaceuticals, or precision instruments, attention should be paid to the compressed air quality rating (such as ISO 8573-1:2010 standard), and post-treatment equipment (refrigerated dryer, filters, etc.) may need to be installed.
